My daughter and I used this route as the beginning of our through-hike into Desolation Wilderness via the Velma Lakes and Dick's Pass and out to Fallen Leaf Lake. It is indeed a moderate trail for the average hiker. Switchbacks begin immediately on the trail, but it is a short hike. Granite Lake is a beautiful spot, but watch out for the chipmunks that want to share your lunch. Pick up a map and info at the Tahoe Visitor Center near Camp Richardson Resort on highway 89 in South Tahoe. If you're up to it, hike on up between Maggie's Peaks at 8400 feet to glimpse the granite expanses of Desolation Wilderness. Better yet, plan a hike into Desolation...you never regret the experience!
