Brushy Peaks Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"Sugarloaf Ridge State Park contains three distinct ecological systems. In Sonoma Creek Canyon are riparian redwood forests that also include Douglas fir, gray pines, big-leaf maple, California bay laurel, and California buckeye. Along the open meadows are oak and fir woodlands. Atop the dry exposed ridges are chaparral varieties, including manzanita, toyon, coyote brush, and chamise. This loop hike explores all three habitats. The first half of the hike follows the Planet Walk. This interpretive trail illustrates the size of our solar system by reducing its size over two billion times to fit within the park boundaries."

This loop hike explores all three habitats. The first half of the hike follows the Planet Walk along the canyon. The interpretive trail illustrates the magnitude of the solar system by proportionately reducing its size over two billion times to fit within the park boundaries. Informative panels represent the sun and each of the nine planets. The Planet Walk begins at the gated road by the Robert Ferguson Observatory and ends on the ridge straddling Napa and Sonoma counties. The hike continues up to the dry ridge, following the rolling ridge over six peaks. The expansive views span across the Mayacamas Mountains and down Napa Valley. The return loop steadily descends from the ridge back to the Sonoma Creek floor."
