This eTrail describes the southern section of the Central Valley, south of Sacramento, including San Luis Reservoir, the Stockton area, and the Sierra foothills north of Merced. California’s Central Valley is one of the most productive farming areas in the world. A drive along Interstate 5 through the Sacramento Valley reveals an astoundingly diverse agricultural bounty rarely seen anywhere. Miles and miles of orchards, vineyards, rice, and vegetable crops seem to stretch to an endless horizon. To a traveler accustomed to the smaller farms of the eastern United States, California agriculture boggles the mind. But not all of the Central Valley is farmland. The eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada offer a variety of outdoor adventures. Large lakes provide opportunities for a full range of water sports, and the foothills offer miles of hiking, equestrian, and mountain biking trails, as well as picnicking and wildlife-watching opportunities.
