It is within Emigrant Wilderness, Yosemite National Park, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Stanislaus National Forest, and Hoover Wilderness. It is 63.8 miles long and begins at 9,661 feet altitude. Traveling the entire trail is 128.8 miles with a total elevation gain of 30,964 feet. The Sonora Pass saddle is near the trailhead. The Dorothy Lake Pass saddle can be seen along the trail. There are also reservoirs along the trail.
