Lovers Leap

Lovers Leap Professional Review and Guide

"The sheer face of Lovers Leap looms above the American River valley like a bantamweight Gibraltar, a familiar landmark to Tahoe-bound travelers on U. S. Highway 50. Rock climbers know the face more intimately as the Tahoe region’s most challenging climb. The trail to the top, however, is easy enough for children."

"Lovers Leap is a picturesque granite dome that tops out almost at 7000 feet and has a nearly 600-foot face that is the envy of technical climbers from far and wide. For non-climbers, a 1.25-mile trail beginning in Camp Sacramento is the easiest route to the top of Lovers Leap and the dramatic view across the chasm of South Fork American River to the peaks of Desolation Wilderness."

A good short hike--there are some steep and rocky places, but it's not a difficult trek. It is short enough and fun enough that kids and dogs enjoy it. We caught nice sights of Horsetail Falls and Pyramid Peak. Beautiful views from Lover's Leap!

A little wonky to pass through camp sacramento to access the trailhead. I would recommend doing this hike during a shoulder season so the camp isn't in use. The trail itself is very pleasant- nicely maintained, shaded, great views of horsetail falls on the other side of the canyon during the spring. Cons would be Highway traffic noise for the first half of the hike and potential for crowds when the camp is in use.

Nice simple trail, easy to find. Defiantly worth the quick hike. One thing to add is there are 2 parking spots in the camp just across the bridge and to the left of the camp's front entrance.

Short, moderately steep trail with great views. We encountered some snow on the trail, but nothing that warranted ice axes or crampons.
