Echo Lakes to Lake of the Woods and Ropi Lake

Echo Lakes to Lake of the Woods and Ropi Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Lake of the Woods, with numerous coves, islands, and campsites, is a popular destination accessible by maintained trail. The rest of Desolation Valley beyond Lake of the Woods is one of the most picturesque corners of Desolation Wilderness. Beneath the rugged east face of majestic Pyramid Peak, the granite, glacier-scoured basin holds a plethora of lakes and ponds, most of which are not accessible by developed and maintained trail. Hikers and backpackers with rudimentary cross-country skills have a fantastic playground for exploration of the nooks and crannies of this alpinelike basin."

"This section of the famed Pacific Crest Trail is one of the most popular routes into the heart of Desolation Wilderness. The relatively high-elevation start, coupled with the ability to shave off 2.5 miles of hiking (each way) by taking the water taxi across Echo Lakes, makes this a highly desirable entry point for backcountry enthusiasts.

With a bounty of scenic lakes and plenty of dramatic mountain scenery so easily accessible, the area’s popularity is no mystery. While backpackers contend for a limited number of wilderness permits, hikers are free to roam the backcountry within a day’s journey at will-just don’t expect to be alone."

6/29 Emigrant Lake level 3, 8.2 mi, +800/-25 elev gain, 8600'at highest http://www.trails.com/tcatalog_trail.aspx?trailid=HGS462-035 nice trail - lots of soft earth in the tall pines, gets rocky and hilly at the end - bring bug spray for sure! the trail goes the length of Caples lake so there was plenty of water for the dog, crossed and followed some streams too. towards the end the trail climbs over a ridge, but not too high - def less shade though. Emigrant lake isn't very shaded, but the cool air up there was wonderful! and there was a good breeze coming off caples lake, so really the rocky climbing part was the only hot part of the day. it was about 9 miles all done. with it in the 100s at home, we stayed at the 81* parking lot and had a few beers waiting for the heat of the day to pass before heading home! Good hike - not too hard, not too hot, nice destination, pretty along the way! — in Kirkwood, CA

Wonderful trip, description accurate except that impact of sharp granite on hiking with significant pack load could be emphasized.

This was a great trip though it was 100 degree weather and that made the trail tougher. Plenty of water but with the heat came plenty of rattlesnakes. Saw many deer, even a buck standing in our trail and had one bear sighting. Emerald lake is beautiful but very little shade offered. It took us 5 hours to get to the first campsite past the meadow. Fishing was not great, though we did have a sample of rainbow trout for a dinner!
