Hole-in-the-Ground Loop Trail

Hole-in-the-Ground Loop Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Hole-in-the-Ground is one of the premier rides in Tahoe. Well-designed and technical singletrack takes you up ridge tops to sweeping views of Castle Peak and beyond. Miles of smooth, hard-packed trails are laced with loose volcanic rubble, granite slabs, stream crossings, and more rocks. Side trips to pristine alpine lakes offer breaks along the way—and a chance to swim in the right weather. The snow lingers up here, hiding the trail and making things soggy when it melts. It’s best to let things dry out before tackling this ride. The stream crossing at Mile 12.3 can be dicey, so don’t jump the gun on this ride until late July. An outand- back to Lola Montez Lakes is a great option to maximize the singletrack and skip the tedious fire roads at the end of the loop. Either way, bring some extra tubes for all the rocks."

I recommend parking near the fire station at Soda Springs and riding this trail as a loop. This is definately a loop to test your fitness and riding skills. Some very technical and steep downhill staircase stuff at the end to watch out for. Definately one of my top 3 rides in the USA.

Wonderful loop of varied terrain, including some nice granite slabs. Technically challenging in spots, but loads of fun. Must be in good shape to enjoy it. Park near Soda Springs and ride it as a loop.
