The Heaps Peak Arboretum is one of the best places to learn how to recognize trees commonly found in the San Bernardino Mountains. The handicappedaccessible trail makes a short loop through the forest, stopping at interpretive signs identifying Coulter and sugar pine, black oak, white fir, and incense cedar, and ending at a grove of giant sequoias. It is open yearround 24-hours a day, and is well worth a stop while driving between Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear. Volunteer staff are usually available on weekends from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. to answer questions.
