The name Packsaddle Ridge Trail does not correctly refer to the route shown on the map on this site. The northern half of this route is part of the Horse Trail Ridge Trail. There is extremely heavy brush covering this trail in the vicinity of Red Cap Prairie. The southern half of the route is the alignment of an old jeep trail that rises from a public road to a ridge top intersection with the Horse Trail Ridge Trail. This alignment intersects and crosses the Red Cap Hole Trail about halfway up the climb. The lower part is heavily overgrown and not usable as a trail at this time. The upper part is also overgrown, but it may be possible for a hiker to push through. There is no plan to maintain any part of this old jeep trail alignment as a hiking trail in the future. Note that the name Packsaddle Ridge properly refers to a ridge that branches north from the northern part of Horse Trail Ridge. This is shown on topographic maps. There is an old trail alignment along that ridge, but it is probably heavily overgrown.
