Sheephead Pass

Shoshone, California

Sheephead Pass Professional Review and Guide

"This rarely used cross-country route, recommended for experienced desert hikers only, leads to the crest of the Ibex Hills in the southeastern corner of Death Valley National Park, where far-ranging vistas unfold across miles of rugged mountain ranges along the California-Nevada border. The broad, low gap of Sheephead Pass separates the colorful rocky summits of Sheephead Mountain to the northwest, composed of calico volcanic rocks, from the broad, dark mass of Ibex Peak and the Ibex Hills to the southeast. This fine, pleasant day hike, cross-country much of the way, leads across open desert to a panoramic viewpoint on the southeast boundary of Death Valley National Park."
