Death Valley West Side Road

Death Valley West Side Road Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The main paved highway, California 178, travels along the east side of Death Valley near the foot of the Amargosa Range. On the west side of the valley, the graded dirt West Side Road travels an alternate route, closer to the Panamint Range, that crosses the prehistoric bed of Lake Manly. Along the 40-mile route to Furnace Creek, the road passes many historic points of interest as well as accessing three 4WD trails that penetrate west into the Panamint Range. The road is graded dirt for its entire length and is suitable for passenger vehicles in dry weather. However, the surface can be extremely washboardy and slow going. There is a 25 mph speed limit. In wet weather, the crossing of the Amargosa River can be impassable, and the road may be closed by the National Park Service. Special Attractions: Trail crosses the dried-up, prehistoric bed of Lake Manly; Historic sites, graves, and points of interest; Access to three 4WD spur trails that travel up canyons into the Panamint Range. This trail is graded dirt but suitable for a normal passenger vehicle. It usually has gentle grades, is fairly wide, and has very shallow water crossings (if any)."

I only used about 10 miles of this trail. But plan on using the rest this coming weekend. I need to photograph some ruins for my ghost town website.
