Dinkey Lakes

Dinkey Lakes Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This hike leads to the Dinkey Lakes, a cluster of alpine lakes on the western side of the Sierra Nevada. Large meadows and easy terrain capped by granite mountains make this a pleasant and scenic trip. The Dinkey Lakes Wilderness protects a cluster of tall peaks and alpine lakes that rise far to the west of the main crest of the Sierra Nevada.

An island of granite high country in the midst of a vast sea of forest, this pocket wilderness is a haven for hikers looking for mountain beauty but not wanting to work too hard to get to and appreciate it. The obvious highlight of the area is the large collection of lakes that huddle around the tall Three Sisters, a long ridge crest that has three prominent points, and Dogtooth Peak, a spiked tower best viewed from Courtright Reservoir."

"This Dinkey Lakes Wilderness hike takes you past four lakes and several meadows at the edge of the forest cradled by granite mounds. The trail is mostly on a level to moderate grade except for the necessary short, strenuous sprints between lakes. This jaunt is made to order for dogs that love to scurry, splash, and be merry. Coincidentally, according to the forest service, the area was named after a little dog, who reportedly tussled with a grizzly in these parts in 1889." Read more

Five lakes in seven miles -- awesome. I've hiked here several times, sometimes as a backpacking trip, other times as a day hike. It is always beautiful, serene, and fun.

Great hike. Easily done in a day. I recommend hiking the direction of Mystery Lake first. Lots of mesquitos so wear repelent. We had a GPS so we went on to Rock Lake and then up to view Dogtooth Peak. Definately worth the extra hiking to see. Makes the hike 11.65 miles. I would rate this a 3 in difficultly.
