This trip leads hikers into an “island” of high country on the western slopes of the Sierra, where dense conifer forests and rich meadows merge with a rocky crest of 10,000-foot peaks.

Trail head was easy to find, but the trail itself is not entirely marked so be prepared to leave landmarks as you continue further into the wilderness. The weather was unpredictable, we were not ready for the rain and thunder. Be prepared for SWARMS OF MOSQUITOES!! We were unable to stop for even a second without getting completely covered by them, couldn't even enjoy the snacks we packed. The overall hike was moderate to difficult because the trail was not as clearly marked and we ended up off of it at one point and the mosquitoes slowed us down. If we had been a little more prepared, it might have been tolerable. The drive to Courtright was beautiful and we were glad to have finished the hike.

Did this trail in early June 2008 with my 12 year old daughter. Snow was still on trail, some areas difficult to navigate. Cliff lake was excellent; great fishing and wonderful hikes. Some sites seem to have high usage, some difficulty in finding firewood.
