"Just north of Castle Crags Wilderness, tiny Heart Lake perches among boulders and trees high above Castle Lake. The massif of Mt. Shasta looms beyond, a great geographic transition easily observed without the physical punishment of other nearby hikes."

"Climbing from the shores of large Castle Lake to the rocky bowl of tiny Heart Lake leads hikers into a world of rugged cliffs, small ponds, and delicate meadows overshadowed by an incomparable view of mighty Mount Shasta. The Trinity Divide’s small Heart Lake is a lovely jewel of alpine goodness. The lake is nestled in a rocky bench at the foot of cliffs that rise nearly 500 feet to the summit of Castle Peak. Far below, beneath the great cliffs that fall away from Heart Lake’s rocky bench, lie the clear waters of Castle Lake, the largest lake in the region and certainly among the most beautiful. Yet despite Heart Lake’s enviable setting, it is set apart by one utterly unbeatable feature. Of all the alpine lakes in the vast Klamath Mountains, none have a finer view of Mount Shasta. The great volcano lies only a few miles to the east."

"Tucked on a bench in the cliffs high above spectacular Castle Lake, little Heart Lake is one of the most stunning little bodies of water in Northern California. The tiny lake is graced with a spectacular view of Mount Shasta. It is one of the most iconic views in the area, yet it is also among the easiest to get to. Set beneath soaring cliffs and surrounded by small meadows, the lake’s setting would be worth hiking to even if it did not have such a grand view."

The view from the top of Schonchin Butte is spectacular and well worth the short but steep hike to the top. Even in the heat of the day there was enough shade (some with benches) to rest under. During the fire season there is a fire spotter at the top who was willing to share her knowledge of the topograpy (and her excitement over spotting her second forest fire of the season). There are also plaques describing the topography for each direction. This is one of those hikes that you need to bring plenty of water and pace yourself if you're not in the best of shape but is doable for most people.
