The hike was very easy, only took about 1 hr. Easy place to go with the kids. Water resource is down by a cattle field, so go down stream to collect water, and filter it a couple times. Marginal level of bugs, and unfortunately there are cow pies in the meadows. the further up you go the scarcer they become. Nice day hikes down and up the valley. Wonderful stargazing.

This is a knee jaring downhill lots of loose rocks and the hot springs at the bottom are a dispointment. Go to the bottom of the trail and viist the North fork of the Kern. Along the way there are some nice waterfalls and great fishing once you reach the Kern.

Casa Vieja Trail Professional Guides

Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"A short upside-down day hike. The trail begins in white and red fir, lodgepole, and silver pine forest. It descends gently, passing a wildly blooming and sometimes buggy little meadow. The spring-fed creek that arises here gurgles beside you between lupine-lined banks all the way down to Casa Vieja Meadows. Beyond a fence, the meadow glows vivid green early in the season and is interlaced with a network of little creeks inhabited by beautiful golden trout. Around its edges the forest floor is strewn with tiny but exquisitely flavorful wild strawberries in midsummer." Read more
