After a wet winter, the ponds in Love Valley hold the shimmering, upside-down image of a classic California landscape: a weathered barn nestled at the far end of an Irish green meadow, rounded foothills studded with oaks, and white cumulus clouds billowing over the dark, conifer-draped Palomar Mountain crest. By April or May, the shallow ponds in the valley bottom start shrinking, leaving in their wake an eye-popping display of yellow tidy tips.
