Umbrella Tree Trail Professional Review and Guide
"Umbrella Tree is a massive multi-trunk bay laurel tree in a compact grouping of six old-growth trees. The tree sits on a 2,160- foot knoll along the Sonoma Mountain range. From the knoll are sweeping vistas across Santa Rosa and Bennett Valley to the coastal range. This short but rewarding hike is in North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve, a 736-acre parkland on the north slope of Sonoma Mountain. (The 14-mile Sonoma Mountain range forms the southwest side of Sonoma Valley.) En route to the Umbrella Tree, the hike travels through a redwood grove on the banks of South Fork Matanzas Creek, ascends the mountainside slope through a dense forest, then crosses the open hilltop meadows to an overlook with a picnic bench beside the tree."
