"Truckhaven Trail has changed little from the sandy grade realized by Beaty in the late 1920s. Much of the original route has been paved to form S22, and other sections cross private property. But there are sections, including this 11-mile trail, that are open and accessible to hikers and private vehicles. Most of the trail is 3-rated because of the deep loose sand, but the stretch between the intersections with Arroyo Salado Trail and South Coast #29: Calcite Mine Trail is predominantly 5-rated. In addition, the original incline out of North Fork Arroyo Salado Wash has subsided. A detour is in place, but it involves a short pinch that is very steep and difficult, with a twist at the top. Whether you are climbing or descending, the loose, flaking surface offers little in the way of traction. This pinch is rated a 7 for difficulty in reverse and an 8 in the forward direction because there is a possibility of damaging the sides of your vehicle if you slip sideways on the loose surface. Special Attractions: Historic route of the Truckhaven Grade; Scenic Cannonball, Arroyo Salado, and North Fork Arroyo Salado Canyons. Skilled, experienced four-wheel drivers only. This trail includes very challenging sections with extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts, and/or tight clearances. Mud or sand may necessitate winching."
