I've done this hike many times and it's always been nice. :) Love the rock stairs at the Silver Falls. When they are full, you'll get wet. :)

The hiking opportunities in Big Basin and beyond are plentiful. This is a wonderful overnight hike, staying in the Sunset backcountry campground. The hike begins under redwood trees 100+ feet tall. The feeling is lush and green, and once you leave the Big Basin Headquarters area, very quiet. The initial assent over the ridge is not overly strenuous, and one is completely in the shade. This is a busy trail on weekends, and you will probably meet hikers going in both directions. Once at the falls, they are spectacular in the winter with the water flowing on toward the ocean. The last 600 ft. assent up toward Sunset camp is somewhat strenuous, but it is a great overnight destination. Make sure to call Big Basin state park and make reservations for the backcountry camp ahead of time, and make sure to carry a water purification system. The only reason this trail rates 4 stars instead of a 5, is the number of people on the trail limits the feeling of a backcountry experience.

We've this trail as a 3-day pack, starting @ Saratoga Gap and a two day, staying just about Silver Falls. It works out to 28 miles from the Gap, but breaks up nicely. The trail is fairly easy, although if you are hiking, there are a large number of trail bikers. You need to be loud, or else they'll come speeding around corners and you'll need to jump out of the way. A large part of the trail is fire access road, and there aren't very many water sources. For that reason, you'll want to go early in the year. By August, the falls start to dry up. The trail is lush with ferns and redwoods, and then changes dramatically to chaperrals. Nothing beats being able to dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean at the end!
