Rowher Trail

Rowher Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The state of California has set aside about 20 square miles of tough mountainside for vehicular recreation. Eighteen trails plus forest roads cover the area. Most of the trails are for ATVs and dirt bikes. Rowher Trail, Lookout Trail and the forest roads are suitable for Jeeps and SUVs. A fun ATV and dirt-bike course, next to Staging Area 1, has been set up for kids. The gentle, twisting course is lined with bales of hay for safety. Engine size is limited to 90cc. Extremely steep and rutted. A long and relentless climb up one side of a mountain and down the other. Vehicles must have low-range gears and plenty of power. Lockers or excellent articulation are a must. The trail is mostly dirt and would be impassable if wet. Avoid getting sideways on the steepest hills or risk a rollover. Very challenging for ATV riders and dirt bikers. Route-finding can be confusing through a network of crisscrossing trails."

Started off on Sierra Pelona Trail, which eventually intertwines with Rowher and decided to follow Rowher and eventually take it down on the back end. The final stretch (descent) of Rowher was a little clenching as it was wet and I was in a bone stock 2013 Quad cab Tacoma TRD Off-Road 6-speed (break-over angle cut it close a couple times). With careful wheel placement and a few scrapes on the skid plates I engine braked down in 1st gear low range with the dif locked, but I definitely wish I had a couple more inches of clearance, a little more articulation, body armor and more aggressive tread.

This was described as difficult, and it was! The first section has a gnary uphill over some BIG rocks that I didn't even attempt, it looked new as some one had blocked off the original uphill section. We drove around and completed the rest of it fairly easily in the rover. DIFFICULT!

Great Fun. Made it up easily with a stock FJ cruiser. Some 30+ degree slopes. The way down on the Fire road is fun too. Crosses a seasonal ravine near the bottom where you can hit some fun mud if its flowing. A friend of mine got stuck at the top with his F150. Harder in a truck with a long wheelbase and smaller breakover angle. Another truck was abandoned at the top after what looked like a snapped Axl. The view from the top is awesome. A lot of fun.
