La Cumbre Peak

La Cumbre Peak Professional Review and Guide

"This very easy walk from East Camino Cielo Road follows the old road to sweeping vistas of both the southern and northern slopes—and arguably the best views of Santa Barbara to be had anywhere—from 3,985-foot-high La Cumbre Peak. The peak is the highest point in the Santa Barbara Ranger District accessible by passenger cars."

"Although this is a short hike, it is a magical location and well worth the stop. The loop trail leads to La Cumbre Peak, a 3,985-foot panoramic overlook with incredible views. Cathedral Peak can be seen a short half-mile to the south and 650 feet lower. The unobstructed views of Santa Barbara and the coastline are superb. On clear days, you can see all the way to Point Mugu in the Santa Monica Mountains."

"La Cumbre Peak, at 3,985 feet in height, is not the highest summit in the Santa Ynez Mountains but it is a favorite high point for hikers and may just offer the very best views. Panoramas from the peak take in the coast from Pt. Mugu to Pt. Conception, the Channel Islands and the wide blue Pacific. Mountain vistas include the bold backcountry of the San Rafael and Dick Smith wilderness areas. The Forest Service first constructed a fire lookout atop the peak in the 1920s. The lookout, still standing (barely) today, is of 1945 vintage. The elements and vandals have not been kind to the structure in the years since its abandonment in the early 1980s."
