Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"San Luis Obispo is set among rolling hills and ancient volcanic outcroppings in a lush green valley a few miles east of the coast. Travelers are drawn to this spotless town by its picturesque setting, proximity to the coast, friendly natives, and comfortable climate. The area is bathed in sunshine an average 315 days a year and gets most of its rain from November through March. Summer days are warm, evenings cool enough for a light jacket or sweater. The city, which is the seat of government for San Luis Obispo County, grew up around its lovely mission in the mid-nineteenth century and became a major supply center for nearby ranches. Today it still serves in a similar capacity for rural residents and those residing in smaller ranch and coastal communities. It’s also an active center of social, cultural, and recreational activities, staging numerous events every year. Many of the city’s houses and commercial buildings were erected in the 1800s and early 1900s and have been carefully preserved and restored. Much of the downtown area, in fact, owes its magnetic charm to the fine historic buildings that house the many shops and restaurants. This eTrail includes information on lodging, campgrounds, RV parks, restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and outdoor activities near these coastal cities."
