Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Tucked in the substantial lee of Point San Luis, the sheltered arc of San Luis Obispo Bay provides the most protected coastal touring for 100 miles in either direction. To augment the bay’s excellent natural shelter, a 0.5-mile breakwater was constructed around the turn of the twentieth century from materials quarried from Morro Rock in Morro Bay (before it became a nature preserve). Port San Luis provided safe harbor for a thriving shipping industry during the last 150 years or so, and it is now a refuge for the local fishing fleet and a handful of kayakers.

Beginners will generally enjoy flat water all the way from the launch beach to the point; more experienced paddlers can access the secluded beaches and rock gardens along the cliffs to the east or to the north of the jetty. Sea otters, harbor seals, and sea lions frequent the area."
