El Moro Elfin Forest

A lovely, easy walk through through a 90-acre nature preserve. El Moro Elfin Forest Natural Area (owned by San Luis Obispo County Park and California State Parks) is named for the short stature of the California Live Oaks here, which are dwarfed by the local environment, even though many of them are centuries old.

The boardwalk loop is a one mile educational walk, and guides are provided near the beginning of the trail. The numbers in the guide match the numbers that are posted along the toe rail of the boardwalk. There are plenty of opportunities to look, listen, and learn about the coastal dune scrub, pygmy oak woodland, maritime chaparral, and the many beautiful native plants on both sides of the boardwalk.

Multiple benches are located around the loop and provide nice spots to sit and enjoy the gorgeous mountain, bay, and estuary views all around.

This is a quiet and easy little hike with awesome views of Morro Bay State Park, Morro Rock, the estuary, and the very pretty surrounding peaks which are still fairly green from recent rains. Sticky monkey flowers are in abundance! The trail is great for kids and leashed dogs.
