This invigorating walk takes you into three distinctive San Francisco neighborhoods. From the humble and historic Harvey Milk Plaza on the corner of Castro and Market Streets, climb into the Upper Castro and lower Twin Peaks residential areas. The garden-lined and very steep Vulcan Street stairs help you gain altitude in a neighborhood noted for its eclectic mix of architectural styles and maze of curvy streets—quite unlike the grid that overlays the rest of San Francisco. The neighborhood is rarely visited by tourists, so you may find yourself marvelously alone.

I' ve done a lot of climbing in San Francisco because my son-in-law prefers to walk rather than take the bus or cable car up. This area was one of the steeper parts.
