Rose Hill Cemetery and Chaparral Loop

Rose Hill Cemetery and Chaparral Loop Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Mining is a dirty business, no matter the pretty names—black diamonds for coal, quicksilver for mercury. Given the damage done as ores were wrestled from Bay Area mountains in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, some of these sites have been effectively and poignantly reclaimed.

This former coal-mining district is home to a historic cemetery and dark shafts that yielded the “black diamonds” that fired San Francisco commerce in the early twentieth century. Views of Suisun Bay and a walk on smooth sandstone punctuate the trails."

Headstones tell of Welsh miners & their families who perishing in mine accidents or from disease. While the sun may shine outside, miners toiled in near blackness.
