Phoenix Lake was created in 1905 when the long-defunct Marin Water and Power Company built the dam, which created the reservoir. History has it that the dam was going to be put up over the old Shaver stagecoach line, cutting off the dairies from Ross Station so that the ranchers would have to make the more tedious run over the hills to Fairfax. There were some threats, some guns pulled, and in a compromise, a road was built across the dam and up the canyon. It’s this road where the hike begins.
