Peaks of Potrero Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"In the late eighteenth century when space grew short near the Spanish mission, cattle were moved to this area, then called Potrero Nuevo (new pasture). In 1855 during the Mexican period, Potrero Nuevo was granted to the twin sons of Francisco de Haro.

De Haro was the ?rst alcalde (mayor) of San Francisco (then Yerba Buena) in 1835. In 1846, when the United States and Mexico were at war, the nineteenyear-old twins were shot dead for being suspected of carrying messages for the Mexican military."
