Most of San Francisco’s “hidden gems” have long been sussed out, but Burleigh Murray Ranch State Park, just east of Half Moon Bay, remains a bit obscure and underutilized. Come for the peace, come for the quiet, come to revisit ranching days long gone at the old barn at trail’s end. Ranching along California’s coast has a long tradition. It began in the earliest colonial times with the arrival of padre Junipero Serra and his missionary expedition in 1769. When the Mexican government ceded California to the United States nearly one hundred years later, many of the state’s sprawling ranchos were transferred to American cattlemen, who operated dairy farms up and down the rugged coastline.
