Magee Peak

Magee Peak Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"My dogs and I absolutely love cirque-surrounded, subalpine lakes. On this hike, you’ll pass two beautiful examples that are much less visited than lakes in nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park—and you’ll top out on one of Shasta County’s Top 10 highest points."

"The stiffly graded Magee Trail was originally designed not for hikers but for pack mules that resupplied the fire lookout on top of the peak. Since the lookout is now gone, and so are the mules, the Forest Service has elected not to maintain the trail for hikers, which is a shame. Although steep, rocky, and waterless, the trail offers hikers in good shape the opportunity to reach one of the area’s best views, including Lassen Peak and the Mt. Tehama rim. Hikers may have to clamber over and around numerous deadfalls on the lower section of trail and plow through some overgrown brush on the upper section, but the incredible view from the summit is well worth it." "The girls and I absolutely love cirque-surrounded, subalpine lakes. On this hike, you’ll pass two beautiful examples that are much less visited than lakes in nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park—and you’ll top out on one of Shasta County’s Top 10 highest points. To start, walk up the road, bear right and then left at two intersections within the first 200 yards of hiking, then cross Eiler Gulch Creek. You know you’re on the right path—it’s well-worn, as this is a popular weekend backpacking destination—as you start to climb southeast at a good clip, through a canopy of Jeffrey pine, white fir, and the occasional western juniper."
