Journey to the most remote wilderness in the Bay Area. To reach vast and distant Orestimba Wilderness, you must first hike more than 15 miles across some of the Bay Area’s most rugged terrain. It’s another 15 arduous miles back out. In between, stay as long as you possibly can in this seldom-visited wilderness area. It’s an epic. En route, in the middle of the park, is Mississippi Lake. At nearly a mile long, it’s the park’s largest lake and home to a sizeable population of largemouth bass. The surrounding blue oak woodland and a pleasant lakeshore site make this haven a worthwhile trip in its own right.
