Forest Knolls Professional Review and Guide
"The rock formations in San Francisco, built up through millions of years of sediment pressure and tectonic upheavals, appear to grade and slide in a geological pattern we can only guess is discernible in thousand-year intervals. The rock around San Francisco quietly informs us of its past through its presence. The rocks are red and crumbly—sometimes they are made up of granite pushed up from South America, and sometimes it has become serpentine, or sandstone. All of these rock types make up the slopes of Mount Sutro, one geologic chunk at a time."
--Adah Bakalinsky with Mary Burk, Stairway Walks in San Francisco (Wilderness Press).
