The Coastal Trail at Lands End unfurls along the northwest edge of San Francisco, within sight of the Golden Gate Bridge and the narrow strait that separates Point Lobos from the steep folds of the Marin Headlands. The Lands End trail follows the route of the Cliff House and Ferries Railway, which at the turn of the twentieth century transported visitors to resort attractions built on Point Lobos by self-made millionaire and one-time San Francisco mayor Adolph Sutro. The former railroad grade supports an impressively scenic trail with unparalleled views of the Golden Gate Bridge, maritime traffic in the strait, and the undulations of the Marin Headlands.
