This hike explores the Point Loma tidepools along the western (ocean) shore of the promontory. The area is home to some of the finest tidepools in southern California. From below the 400-foot sandstone cliffs, the trail strolls along the rugged, rocky bluffs and shoreline through the intertidal zone, passing rock outcrops, offshore reefs, pounding surf, and tidepools. A self-guiding trail with exhibits explains the plants, animals, and history of the area. Although the area is magnificent to explore at any time, low tide is the best time to view the tidepools.
