Ocean Beach Park, Dog Beach to Ocean Beach Pier

San Diego, California

Ocean Beach Park, Dog Beach to Ocean Beach Pier Professional Review and Guide

"Dog Beach is located on the north end of Ocean Beach along the mouth of the San Diego River and across the harbor channel from Mission Bay. It is a favorite oceanfront spot among canines. Nearly every car arrival has an enthusiastic, tail-wagging dog, and every departure has a tired and satisfied pooch. It is the only city beach in San Diego that allows dogs to run free (and one of three in the county, along with Del Mar and Coronado). To the east are sand dunes, marshland, and inter-tidal communities. The dunes act as a barrier for the calm estuary, which receives fresh water from the river and salt water from the ocean. To the south is the Ocean Beach Pier, a concrete, 2,100-foot T-shaped fishing pier. The sandy beach between Dog Beach and the pier is a popular surfing and swimming area with a paved promenade and grassy picnic grounds. This hike begins at Dog Beach and explores the wetlands to the east and the promenade south to the pier."
