Father Junipero Serra Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Mission Gorge is arguably the most spectacular topographical feature in the city of San Diego. On both sides of the gorge, walls rise several hundred feet at a nearly 45-degree pitch. From a geological perspective, the gorge was carved out by the “mighty” San Diego River—mighty during Pleistocene times, anyway.

The water kept eroding its way through a rising block of tough igneous rock for millions of years. The surrounding granitic peaks—South Fortuna Mountain to the north and Kwaay Paay Peak to the south—were formed more than 100 million years ago from molten rock created deep underground through plate tectonics as the Farallon ocean plate slid beneath the light North American continental plate."
