"Finding the campground: From San Clemente, drive 2 miles south on I-5, take the Christianitos Road exit, and drive east for 1 mile.

About the campground: Situated off the inland side of the highway, San Mateo affords limited shade at some sites. A 1.5-mile trail leads from the campground to Trestle’s Beach, one of the three beaches in San Onofre State Beach. About halfway down this trail, a spur trail leads to San Mateo Creek Natural Preserve, a riparian habitat. Stay limit fifteen days from June through September, thirty days from October through May. Open all year."
