Old Baldy—South Approach

Old Baldy—South Approach Professional Review and Guide

"This route, which makes use of the “skihut trail” through upper San Antonio Canyon, is the most varied and interesting of the several ways to reach the top of Old Baldy. The approach is direct and satisfying. The higher you climb, the more rewarding the view, and the greater your sense of accomplishment.

From Manker Flats, walk up the ski-lift-maintenance road 0.9 mile to the unmarked ski-hut trail on the left. This junction is 0.3 mile past the sharp hairpin turn opposite San Antonio Falls. The sketchy trail climbs up a rocky slope, then maintains a steep but well-graded ascent high along the east wall of upper San Antonio Canyon. Bigcone Douglas-fir, Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, and white fir tress clothe the slopes, which are accented by blooms of Indian paintbrush, wallflower, and yucca during the late spring and early summer."
