North Shore Recreational Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This easily accessible trail unconventionally takes you downhill, saving the uphill climb for the return trek. The trail meanders down a new-growth forested canyon with views eastward across the rugged San Bernardino Mountains. The trail parallels and crosses a seasonal stream before leveling off at the site of the old Splinter cabin just before pooch gets to cool off at Deep Creek and paw the iconic Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).

The hike begins in the lovely mountaintop North Shore Campground. although the trail traces Little Bear Creek down a canyon ravaged by the Old Fire of 2003, the new growth of oak woodland dotted with fledgling pines is healing the scarred land. Willows and ferns are bountiful along the creek, and the slopes are covered with manzanita, buckwheat, and rock outcrops.

The trailhead sign warns hikers about rattlesnakes, which are more common in the late spring to early fall. Keeping your dog on a leash will keep him safer from getting too nosy with the wrong critter."
