"A popular route with mountain bikers and hikers alike, the Sweetwater Trail follows the southern shoreline of Folsom Lake below the inflow of the South Fork American River. Mostly shaded, the trail winds through oak woodland and small meadows, with side trails leading waterside. The Sweetwater Trail’s greatest asset is its setting—it winds through a healthy oak woodland, sports views through the trees across a long arm of the South Fork American River as it feeds Folsom Lake, and includes passage through moist, shady drainages and across open meadowlands. But the successful comingling of diverse trail interests is also highlighted on this route." Read more

"Your hike starts out under the cover of shade on this multipurpose dirt trail. Little route finding is necessary, since the south trending trail is pretty distinct all the way to Sweetwater Creek. You will ascend and descend into and out of a few small ravines on the way. Following the cool side of Folsom Lake’s southern finger, the Sweet water Trail begins just below the point where the South Fork of the American River meets the waters of the lake and curves around the low hills to the inlet of Sweetwater Creek (at Salmon Falls Road), slightly southwest of your trailhead. In 2007, the inlet filled by Sweetwater Creek was dry and rock-strewn. Now it’s a pleasant haven for fish, frogs, and mosquitoes." Read more

Accessible parking available, and bathroom facilities at trail head. Started on trail but was stopped at washed out, tree down section ...wasn't prepared! Looks like great trail...will return.

This is a great short trail. It takes about 1 hour to go out and back. You can start from either end if you want to mix it up. It has beautiful scenery and plenty of technical spots to keep it interesting. I will be visiting this trail frequently, especially when I just want to get a short ride in.
