Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"If the American River is the parkway’s lifeblood, then the 32-mile-long paved Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail is the artery that connects the river to the hearts of the people. Starting at Discovery Park, the national recreation trail links to local neighborhoods via access paths and staging areas, some with facilities including picnic areas, restrooms, and boat launches. The paved path roughly parallels the route of US 50, and access to the trail and parkway is identified on freeway signs." Read more

"This sampling of Sacramento’s premier trail begins at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers and stretches east through manicured parklands and strips of relatively untouched riparian woodlands. The American River Parkway, a linear greenbelt that stretches from downtown Sacramento to Folsom Lake, is without question the most loved open space in the Sacramento region. If the American River is the parkway’s anchor, then the 32-mile paved Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail is the chain that links the river to the hearts of the people. To explore the length of the memorial trail on foot would require days—a feat worthy of the trail’s mountaineering namesake, Jedediah Smith, who hiked across the Sierra in the early 1800s and camped along the river. Taken in segments, however, the trail easily accommodates six to eight great easy day hikes. You could explore the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers at Discovery hour but it is not always obeyed. Stay to the right as you walk, allowing bikers plenty of room to pass. Most cyclists will warn of their approach." Read more
