Gibson Ranch Loop Trail

Gibson Ranch Loop Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The riparian corridor along Dry Creek serves as a shady start to a hiking tour through Gibson Ranch County Park. Between the creek and the park’s wetland area lie picnic areas and playing greens, as well as the paddocks and pastures of boarded horses.

A circumnavigation of Gibson Ranch distills, in just a few miles, the complex interface of Sacramento’s natural, agricultural, and suburban worlds. The richness of the riparian zone along Dry Creek backs up to pastures; the pastures back up to the fenced-off backyards of neighboring homes; a birdsong-filled marsh backs up to farm roads and a radio tower."

"Gibson Ranch provides a regional park experience for residents of the growing suburbs of northeastern Sacramento County and southeastern Placer County. The park was established to preserve a slice of the county’s agrarian heritage, which is fast disappearing under suburban pavement. School children visit to learn about farm life, Civil War reenactors stage historic battles, and equestrians favor the park’s extensive road and trail system. The 300-acre park also includes a large lake, an extensive wetland, and more than a mile of the Dry Creek Parkway. Hikers have several options, including the nearly 3.0-milelong Park Loop, which circumnavigates the park’s boundary; the 2.0 mile out-and-back stroll along Dry Creek; and a short stroll around scenic Gibson Lake. This description focuses on the Park Loop. The many short and level walking options, water attractions, and livestock make this a great destination for families with young children." Read more

I do NOT recommend the full loop for a hot day. The short up and back is fine and in the shade (people were splashing in the creek along the trail). But, the full loop of the park is dry and dusty and HOT with little shade on a summer day. Also - the trail is also used for group horse tours of the ranch - watch for droppings - they are numerous! I did however like the full loop, but will save it for fall/winter when the mountains are too cold.
