Sacramento Northern Bike Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"This rail-trail, mostly flat and nicely paved, cuts north from downtown Sacramento into the suburbs of Rio Linda and Elverta.

A short section is described here, illustrating the provocative dilemmas that urban trails strive to bridge. The route begins amid industry and runs through the strip of riparian parkland along the American River at the border of Discovery Park."

A fun, flat fast trail for bikes, when you don't have to stop at road crossings. That's the only drawback: there are multiple road crossings with stop signs, and a few with stoplights, especially closer to Sacramento, and a couple of places where the trail continuation is not obvious that are poorly marked when going southbound. The scenery is very pretty on the northern end of the trail. Though the trail is rated as "hard" because of distance, it's an easy bike. It makes a nice part of a longer ride when linked with other area bike trails and rural roads.
