Phoenix Lake Trail Professional Review and Guide
"If you have a dog who “loves to read the signs,” gentle Phoenix Lake is the place to be. This 4.2-mile trip is a dog walker’s heaven, where friendly people ask—often—if their dogs can meet your dogs. After a few minutes of sniffing (by dogs, of course), you’ll be on your way until the next encounter. Phoenix Lake was created in 1905 when ranchers built the dam, which created the reservoir. History has it that the dam was going to be put up over the old Shaver stage coach line, cutting off the dairies from Ross Station so that the ranchers would have to make the more tedious run over the hills to Fairfax. There were some threats, some guns pulled, and in a compromise, a road was built across the dam and up the canyon. It’s this road where the hike begins."
