The longest loops you can make in the preserve take you to elevations as high as 3100 feet on the shoulder of Rodriguez Mountain. Hiking those routes, mostly on south-facing slopes, can be hot and monotonous on most days, as there’s little or no shade. In addition, the Paradise Fire of 2003 swept the entire preserve, and the hillside vegetation is still in a recovery phase. The out-and-back route described here, which visits the historic Escondido Canal, features more moderate elevation changes.
