Ponderosa Vista and Whispering Pines Nature Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"These two nature trails are conveniently located for families camping in the Barton Flats Area or driving the back way to Big Bear. The Whispering Pines Trail (1E33) was constructed in 1969 for an episode of the television show, Lassie, in which a blind girl followed Lassie and a ranger around the trail to learn about the forest. The trail winds counterclockwise through the oaks and pines up a gradual hill. In the late spring, this can be a good place to see wildflowers. Woodpeckers have perforated the tall trees atop the hill. There are ten signs along the path and a booklet describing the sights at each sign is usually available at the trailhead for a fee."
