Jenks Lake Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Captain Lorin Shaw Jenks built a trout pond in the 1870s, using a small dam and diverting water from the South Fork of the Santa Ana River along a 1.5-mile ditch. He raised fish and sold them in San Bernardino. Capt. Jenks also founded a resort by the lake and was renowned for regaling his guests with tall tales, but the business failed because the three-day burro ride from town was too long for most visitors. His lake, nestled beneath the tall mountains and surrounded by splendid forest, is now a popular destination for anglers, youth groups, and families. It is stocked with bluegill, sunfish, large-mouth bass, and rainbow trout. Unfortunately, the water is now closed to swimming. While the lake can be reached from the paved Jenks Lake Rd., it is more enjoyable to take the short hike up from Barton Flats Visitor Center, and then saunter around the lake before returning the way you came."
