Bay Area Ridge Trail Professional Review and Guide
"Visit the San Francisco National Cemetery and Mountain Lake on this route through the western reaches of the Presidio. The good, the so-so, and the ugly. The Presidio is a work in progress, and this loop showcases its metamorphosis from base to park without any sugar coating, passing through some areas that are scenically satisfying, and others that could be bolstered a bit—or a lot. A rehabilitated area like Mountain Lake contrasts starkly with the derelict Public Health Service Hospital, though they lie within 0.25 mile of each other. Refurbishing parklands like those around Mountain Lake is relatively straightforward—the park service has much experience in this area—but revamping historic structures that have fallen into disrepair is another thing entirely. The provocative contrasts, which may generate revolutionary ideas, make this a must-do route for all who care about the park."
