Vermilion Campground Professional Review and Guide
"Vermilion Campground is superb tent camping and worth every bit of the terrifyingbut- beautiful drive in over Kaiser Pass. Plan on at least a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Huntington Lake. Bring all provisions—only ice and a few sundries are available at Vermilion Valley Resort. Expect your automobile engine to hiccup a bit while climbing the 8,800-foot Kaiser Pass. (Buy premium gasoline for the climb; your car will thank you.) Turn on your lights, since the road is narrow, and remember, cars coming up have the right of way."
--Jane & Hans Huber with Bill Mai, The Best In Tent Camping: Southern California (Menasha Ridge Press).
Dark canyon it is, nestled in a dense grove of old growth cedar. The nearby creek has highly endangered mountain yellow-legged frogs, but posted signs warn you to stay away. Above the campground is a nice ridge trail with open vistas, boulders, and large Jeffrey's pine forest.
