Poker Flat OHV Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Poker Flat OHV Trail leaves California 49 from the western edge of Downieville. The well-marked, formed CR 509 immediately starts to climb away from the North Yuba River along a shelf road. The trail, initially suited for high-clearance 2WD vehicles, climbs into Tahoe National Forest and travels below the flat-topped Fir Cap. An OHV trail rated more difficult by the forest service runs over the top of Fir Cap, providing excellent views from the summit. This trail can be very brushy. Special Attractions: Long trail that passes many pioneer mining settlements and cemeteries; Site of Poker Flat; Steep, challenging grades to and from Poker Flat; Panoramic views from Saddleback Fire Lookout. High-clearance 4WDs are preferred, but any high-clearance vehicle is acceptable. Expect a rough road surface; mud and sand are possible but will be easily passable. You may encounter rocks up to 6 inches in diameter, a loose road surface, and shelf roads, though these will be wide enough for passing or will have adequate pull-offs."

This trip was one of my favorite trips. We brought the H2 and the Jeep down there, the scenery is beautiful and there were cool spots to check out. We camped near the river and on the way out you see these amazing houses and very old tombstones. A very interesting place, a lot of bees and mosquitoes there so you might want to take repellent with you. Great trail I recommend it.

Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"A fun, challenging drive that passes through two historic 1850 gold mining towns: Poker Flat and Howland Flat. A few interesting structures still remain. If you have time, take the 0.8-mile side trip to manned Saddleback Fire Lookout. Camp at Poker Flat Off Highway Vehicle Campground. This trail serves as a shortcut between Downieville and La Porte. Street-legal vehicles only allowed in Poker Flat area. Most of this route is easy, however, to reach Poker Flat, you must descend into a deep canyon and climb back out the other side. This stretch is steep, narrow and rough. One creek crossing can be deep during periods of heavy rain. Suitable for aggressive stock SUVs."
